Mary Hewett Bailey, one of five children born to Judge Frank M. and Hope
Hewett Bailey and a lifetime resident of Chickasha, was born on May 23,
1909. She was graduated from Chickasha High School in 1926. After
teaching two years in Anadarko, she began teaching history in her
hometown in September of 1933. She maintained a great fondness for her
many students from 42 years of being in the classroom, and she continued
to enjoy visiting with them and hearing about their lives and families.
CHS class reunions were always a highlight for her, and in 1970, the
State Fair of Oklahoma named her ‘Teacher of the Year’. Ms. Bailey
earned a BA degree in history and government at the OU, and received a
degree in English and mathematics at OCW in Chickasha, now U.S.A.O. She
earned a Master’s Degree in history at OU, publishing a thesis on the
history of Grady County. She was a member of the Epworth UM Church,
Delta Kappa Gamma, Alpha Phi, AAUW, DAR, OEA, Grady County and OK
Historical Societies, and served on many civic organizations. She was
instrumental in organizing the Girl Scouts of America in Chickasha. She
died on April 2, 2006, in Chickasha.
